Who are the Miao?
As an ethnic group, the Miao mostly reside in the mountainous areas of southern and southwestern China. Hmong is their another name. The Miao are well known for their extraordinary handmade arts and crafts like embroidery, brocade, batik, and silver jewels. The Miao like to get together singing and dancing to enjoy life during holidays. For young people, holidays are golden time to look for their partners.
Flirting
If a man shows interest in a girl, he will follow her and may suddenly give her finger a gentle pinch. If the girl has a good feeling about the man, she will look at him with a smile; or she just ignore him if she doesn’t like.
Some men may flirt with girls by “asking for candy.” He’ll ask a girl for some candy, and if she doesn’t like him, she will say, “my candy is all sold out, you can go to somewhere else to ask.” However if the girl likes the man, she would drop a hint, ” follow me please.” Then she walks away. The man will follow her to the woods or riverside to have a talk.
Dating
When going on a date, Miao lovers have their own signs to indicate the place and time to meet. The one who arrives first will use a patch of tall grass to tie a knot and leave a special mark directing the other to the meeting place.
Each sign has a special meaning. A bee made of couch grass suggests: I have arrived here, but tell me if you come? A dragonfly made of a vanilla plant indicates: I will see you in the same place, come here soon please! A grasshopper signifies: please forgive me, I can’t come to see you now. Grass braided together with a white flower shows: we don’t need to see each other anymore as you have never come to meet me on time.
When their partner arrives, she/he will tie another knot in the middle of the same patch of grass to tell others not to bother them.
After several times of meeting, they will send to each other some private things as a token. The girl gives her silver ornaments like silver hair pin or handkerchief to the man, and the man gives the girl his tobacco pipe or any othr personal things.
Marriage
When a Miao couple decides to get married, they will tell their parents, who then ask a matchmaker to fix the wedding date.
Sometimes an interesting thing will happen if the parents don’t agree. The man together with other people will come to the girl’s home at night to ” rob” her and take her to his home. Three days past, the man’s family now send an old reputable man with a chicken to see the girl’s parents, and persuades them to agree.
