“If you are looking for love,” wrote Roman poet Ovid in year 5 A.D., “you should spend your time in the stadium and the theatre, since you are most likely to find a companion to your taste if you search in public places. Even bees know that, when it comes to making honey, one should keep close to the flowers.”

Two thousand years have gone by since Ovid wrote his book The Art of Love. Although the world looks different now, human beings have remained the same. Ovid’s compilation of amorous advice has passed from generation to generation, proving its effectiveness through the ages. Details might have changed, but not the principles.

These are the five main points that I have extracted from Ovid’s book The Art of Love:

1.- MAKE UP YOUR MIND. Determination greatly contributes to success and, in this sense, dating is like any other venture. If you have gone through divorce and decided that now it is the right time for you to start looking for a new partner, then make it a firm resolution and give it the priority that it deserves.

2.- IGNORE NEGATIVE COMMENTS. You can always find reasons not to do something and, if you let people, they will give you more than you can use. Avoid in particular comparing yourself to someone else whom you might consider luckier. The world is made of all kinds of persons. All you have to do is find a good match for yourself. Shrug your shoulders at comparisons and look for the type of person that suits you best.

3.- DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO PLAY. Modern times offer an infinite array of possibilities for meeting people. If you live in a mid-sized town, there are many clubs you can join and different entertainment locales you can visit. The Internet is, of course, the largest club of all. For your search of partner, select the time and venue that go along best with your disposition and interests.

4.- RUN THE RACE. No matter where and how you decide to play, you will increase your chances of success if you do it regularly. Unless you happen to be extraordinarily lucky, you will have to put in the hours. Dating is similar to looking for a job. First, you have to create the opportunity and then you have to seize it.

5.- FIND A BIRD THAT CAN FLY. Get to know people thoroughly before you make any emotional commitment. Be ready to discard what doesn’t work. Don’t hang around someone who is obviously not a good match for you. You are looking for one person to complement you and make you happier than you are now.

If you are serious about finding a partner, single-mindedness and constancy will maximize your chances of success. You can never predict the precise moment when love will come across your way, but if you search persistently and keep your eyes open, the opportunity will come.
